Translation: Beef rolls
Pronunciation: be-fe ho-lei
This recipe is derived from the Italian recipe Bracciola. My great grandmother discovered this was a perfect way to reuse leftover pieces of meat. She would wrap little pieces of beef around different vegetables which created zero waste. Since the meats were not prime cuts, she would slow cook the dish so it could be as tender as possible.
Fast forwarding a few decades, my grandmother started making this dish for her family. Sometimes, she would cook it in a pressure cooker with tomato sauce, but her kids would complain about the tomato taste. Her children also prefered carrots and bacon instead of green beans and peppers. This made my grandmother decide to change her mom’s original recipe to a simpler version so her children could make it on weekends. In the end, they were all winners. My mom and her siblings would make the dish with their preferred vegetables while grandma would relax before dinner. They all enjoyed to eat this dish together as a family.
